Sparkle! Artist Profile: Joanne Pelletier

Joanne has been an avid jewellery maker for over 30 years and started making jewelry after participating in a workshop on quill and seed bead earrings.  This inspired her to learn more about beaded jewelry and, using how-to-bead books, was soon was making necklaces, earrings and bracelets.  She soon discovered the benefits of on-line shopping, making the high end supplies including gemstones, sterling silver and art glass that she uses in her jewelry, readily available.  One of the things she enjoys most about designing and making jewelry is the excitement and joy of seeing the pieces come together, resulting in a wearable piece of art.   Joanne says her jewelry is for that woman that truly enjoys a lot of bling!!

Sparkle! Artist Profile: Prairie Sky Creations by Laurie WaltonF

I am an artist who currently specializes handmade jewelry and other accessories using metals such as Sterling silver, copper, brass and titanium, my own handmade lampwork glass beads, semi-precious stones, crystals and other materials I find interesting.

Sparkle! Artist Profile: STONEWENCH by Maria Hendrika

Creating jewellery is my hands on creative passion outside of my day-work which is my other passion.  After winning a beading kit at a local fundraising event a number of years ago, I became a regular student at the Neil Balkwill Arts Centre.  I continue to take classes and enjoy working with others, sharing ideas and learning new techniques.

I work in sterling silver and copper and I love incorporating semi-precious stones and enamelled metals into my designs.  I find that inspiration can come from anywhere - nature, architecture or the colours and textures of everyday items.

I work under the name of STONEWENCH and I am delighted to offer one of a kind wearable works of art to my customers.

Sparkle! Artist Profile: DP Creations Jewellery and Design

My name is David Danial Peters and I am the artist behind DP Creations Jewellery and Design. Though Regina born, I now live in Grand Coulee, a mere 10 min west of Regina (towards Moose Jaw). I have been around jewellery for much of my life as my mom led me shopping from one jewellery store to another. As I always say… her hands made Liberace’s look bare! Naturally I became just as enamored with jewellery as she was.

I have worked at Birks, Paris Jewellers, and I was in management at  Ben Moss Jewellers. Over the years I tired of the cookie cutter designs from “Production” stores and decided I could create unique jewellery! I started my jewellery schooling at the Neil Balkwill Centre taking Jewellery Classes 1 and 2 along with Enameling and Casting . As continual learning and education is important to me, I applied and was accepted to the Ashworth College’s  Jewellery Design and Repair course, a one year course, which I completed in seven months with honors. After receiving my Certificate from Ashworth, I start creating unique pieces of jewellery for family, friends, and vending at the local Arts and Crafts shows. I have been learning, growing and evolving my own unique style of Jewellery ever since.

I create a mixed variety of jewellery styles. I endeavor to be unique and artistic, but my years in the industry are echoed in my more production-oriented pieces. I work mostly in Sterling Silver, but am not opposed to working in Gold! I also work with Copper and a bit of brass. I love to use gemstones and always try to stay true to the quality of true natural gemstones, yet I do use Lab created ( grown crystals) in order to provide my customers with a wide variety of colours and more unique types of stones while still keeping within a reasonable cost.
If asked what inspires me I would have to say everything and nothing all in one. I seem to find some inspiration in nature and how natural things evolve as in my “Melt” pendants but I also love the rigid shapes and mechanical designs of our modernist society. I do treasure historic and antique styles which also echo in my creations.

The thing I most like about designing jewellery is that each person’s perspectives of what jewellery is, or should be like, is different. Therefore I can create jewellery how I see it, with hopes of connecting it with a like-minded person. This way I do not limit my designs by pre-existing views!

Sparkle! Artist Profile: Rock'n by Tara Garratt

Tara creates unique jewellery pieces from rocks, many of which she collects and prepares herself.

"I am inspired by the rocks themselves. When I see a rock I want to bring out its beauty so that everyone can see the same thing I see when I look at it. The part I enjoy the most about jewellery designing is when people say, 'I had no idea that regular stones could look so pretty!' "

Sparkle! Artist Profile: Myrna Allan

Jewellery handcrafted by Myrna Allan

I was raised in a small town in South West Saskatchewan.  Following graduation I moved to Regina to work with the provincial government.  I have always enjoyed creating different things with my hands, however, that was put on hold when I was deeply entrenched in work life.  When I retired I knew that I wanted to do something creative once again, so I enrolled in jewellery courses at Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre.  For the past six years I have continued to learn and improve my skills.  I incorporate many of these acquired techniques and skills into my own Jewellery designs.

Characteristically, my Jewellery is colourful, petite and delicate.  Each piece is unique, demonstrating simple line and form and no two are exactly the same.  I apply many of the silversmithing techniques using sterling silver, copper, brass, titanium and niobium to design and create my Jewellery.  I have always loved colour and I enjoy experimenting and producing many colours which I incorporate into my designs.

Throughout the time at the studio I have met many wonderful people.  It’s been a great way to be creative and socialize at the same time. The social aspect of meeting other creative people is just what I wanted to fulfill my retirement.

I hope you will enjoy wearing my Jewellery as much as I enjoy making and designing the one of a kind pieces.

Sparkle! Artist Profile: J9 Design, Art by Janine

My name is Janine Hamilton. I am the creator of J9 Design, Art by Janine. I currently live in Regina, SK. I started creating jewellery a little over a year ago when I picked up a book on wirewrapping. From there I have completed the first two levels of jewellery making classes at the Neil Balkwill Centre in Regina, under the instruction of Melody Armstrong.

My jewellery has an organic/ natural look. It is beautiful, yet functional. You can wear it at a special occasion or with a pair of jeans and flannel shirt. Some pieces may look delicate but all are made to withstand everyday life and little grabbing fingers.

You can find me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/J9DesignbyJanine or on my website at www.j9design.ca .

The Buds of May - Thirteenth Artist is Prairie Sky Creations

We are pleased to present our other founding member Laurie Walton and her assortment of beautiful jewellery.

I am an artist who currently specializes handmade jewelry and other accessories using metals such as Sterling silver, copper, brass and titanium, my own handmade lampwork glass beads, semi-precious stones, crystals and other materials I find interesting.

For 5 years I lived at the West coast but I returned to my prairie home where I find inspiration in my big colourful prairie sky. I also love rocks and things that are different! I try to create pieces that bring out the best of the materials I use.

I am also a founding member of JewelleryWon. I love encouraging fellow artists in their craft.

You can view more of my work at http://www.prairieskycreations.ca .

The Buds of May - Twelfth Artist is Surrayah's Jewels

We are pleased to welcome back Elaine Gill and her lovely jewellery.

My name is Elaine Gill and I’ve lived in Moose Jaw all my life. I started making jewellery about 4 years ago when I won a strand of gemstone beads. It was love at first sight and there has been no turning back!

I started simply stringing; learning things as I proceeded, picking up new ideas, techniques and awesome new supplies!

I love working with gemstones in as many ways as I can.…with wire, seed beads and incorporating them into other designs! There is something very special about handling these stones. It is the stones that inspire me.

I have tried a lot of different techniques but there are many more I’d love to try….time permitting!

I’ve been asked many times where the name ‘Surrayah’ came from and the answer to that is that it is a stage name used by me years back when I was Belly Dancing. I loved the name so much that I kept it. At that time I was making costumes with all of the sparkle that is Dance and this love for all things colourful and shiny has spilled over into my jewellery making….a natural progression, I think!

I’d say that my style is very eclectic because I have tried so many things but I find that creating something special with the earth’s gemstones to be very peaceful and calming.

More of my creations are available at
 http://www.surrayahsjewels.com/ .

The Buds of May - Eleventh Artist is EllJay Design

We are pleased to present one of our founding members, Laura Steadman and her beautiful work.

Born and raised in Regina, SK, I have been involved in arts and crafts for as long as I can remember. I love the challenge of taking things and transforming them into other things! I have had many creative interests over the years including cross‑stitch and Hardanger embroidery, crochet, designing and making teddy bears, origami as well as drawing and painting.

It was after my step-father had taken a jewellery class that my love for making jewellery was born. I was fascinated by the pieces he made! Several years later, as a gift, my mother signed me up for that same jewellery class. Completely hooked, I fell in love with working with silver and it has become my passion! It is fascinating to see how raw metal sheet and wire can be transformed through various methods into a unique piece of art that can be worn!

I began taking lampwork classes shortly after that and I was captivated by the way glass is transformed from a simple glass rod into a wonderful one-of-a-kind bead. My lampwork beads and cabochons are also used in my jewellery.

I am a founding member of JewelleryWon and have recently become a Juried Member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council. I continue to take classes and work in my Regina studio.

The Buds of May - Tenth Artist is Myrna Allan

We are so pleased to welcom beack Myrna Allan and her colourful jewellery.

For the past five years I have continued to learn and improve my skills.  I incorporate many of these acquired techniques and skills into my own Jewellery designs.

Throughout the time at the studio I have met many wonderful people.  It’s been a great way to be creative and socialize at the same time. The social aspect of meeting other creative people is just what I wanted to fulfill my retirement.

The Buds of May - Ninth Artist is Joanne Pelletier

We are pleased to welcome back Joanne Pelletier and her classic designs.

Tansi, my name is Joanne Pelletier and I am a retired teacher, currently living in Regina.  I have been an avid beader for over 30 years and started making jewelry after participating in a workshop on making quill and seed bead earrings.  This motivated me to learn more about beaded jewelry and, using how-to-bead books, was soon was making necklaces, earrings and bracelets.

The first time I attended BeadExpo in Santa Fe, I was inspired by the sheer volume and variety of gemstone, pearl and designer beads.  I also discovered the benefits of on-line shopping, which makes the high end supplies that I use in my jewellery, readily available.

I began by selling to family, friends and colleagues, but now that I am retired, I am able to make my hobby a full time job.  One of the things I enjoy most about designing and making jewelry is the excitement and joy of seeing the pieces come together, resulting in a distinctive and wearable piece of art.  My jewellery is for that woman that truly enjoys a lot of bling!!

The Buds of May - Eighth Artist is Roxanne Brown

We are pleased to welcome back Roxanne Brown and her beautiful jewellery line.

Roxanne Brown was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up in a family of creative people. Roxanne has been an accomplished seamstress for her adult life with an eye and enthusiasm for tasteful embellishment and accessories.

Over the past 6 years Roxanne has also applied her accumulated skill and artistry to creating jewellery. Through artistically combining handcrafted Lampwork glass beads of other independent artists from around the world, semi-precious stones swarovski crystals and other high quality components; Roxanne creates original pieces that surprise and inspire. Roxanne also applies her skills to creating one-of-a-kind accent purses and scarves. Roxanne's creations come together under the label of Roxanne Brown Jewellery.

Over the past 8 years she has worked as lead seamstress with Dean Renwick Design Studio and as of November 2012 she has left the Design Studio to further her jewellery business on a full-time basis. Roxanne will continue to refine her skills and look for new directions to express her imagination.

The Buds of May - Seventh Artist is Stonewench

We are very pleased to welcome back Maria Hendrika with her beautiful assortment of jewellery.

STONEWENCH by Maria Hendrika

Creating jewellery is my “hands on” creative passion outside of my day-work which is my other passion.  After winning a beading kit at a local fundraising event a number of years ago, I became a regular student at the Neil Balkwill Arts Centre.  I continue to take classes and enjoy working with others, sharing ideas and learning new techniques.

I work in sterling silver and copper and I love incorporating semi-precious stones into my designs.  I find that inspiration can come from anywhere - nature, architecture or the colours and textures of everyday items.

I am delighted to offer one of a kind wearable works of art to my customers.

The Buds of May - Sixth Artist is J9 Design Art

We are pleased to introduce a new artist to our show, Janine Hamilton of J9 Design Art.

My name is Janine Hamilton, and I live in Regina, SK.  I’ve always been into the arts and crafts, and about a year ago I picked up a book on wire wrapping. I’ve enjoyed it so much that I want to start selling my creations.

Right now I mostly do wire wrapping and metal forming. Someday I would like to expand into other fields, such as, lampworking, glass blowing, sewing, pottery,  basically everything I can and someday I hope to teach a few classes.

I’ve taken the first two jewellery classes with Melody Armstrong at the Neil Balkwell Center; which I enjoyed very much. I would say nature and spring inspire me quite a bit. I could spend hours outside watching the birds, bugs, and clouds go by, and spring just smells so good! A lot of my pieces have an organic feel to them.

The Buds of May - Fifth Artist is Beyond Sight Custom Jewellery

We are pleased to welcome back Summer Hartzfeld and her creations to our show as well.

Summer Hartzfeld has been blind since infancy but that hasn't stopped her from crafting beautiful pieces of jewelry. She lives with her Guide dog, Lake, who helps her get about the city.

Summer joined the Regina Farmer's Market in 1997. Lake and Summer make their way to the market by bus, with Summer carrying all her cases in a back pack. She designed her cases herself and had them made by a local craftsperson.

Summer chooses her pieces by shape and texture, rather than by colour. She prefers to work with natural material such as semi-precious stones, sterling silver, and shells.

Summer crafts all her own wire components from sterling silver wire. By touch she is able to make perfect loops and swirls. She can feel the smallest inclusion in a stone and can frequently tell the type of stone by its feel.  She starts playing with the beads, feeling each one, and figuring what shapes will go together. She carefully chooses her stones. Her hands are her eyes.

For colour, Summer relies on the description from her sighted friends. Majority rules when it comes to colour, as everyone seems to have their own way of describing it.

In Summer’s words, “I think the stones show how amazing God's Creation is.”

The Buds of May - Fourth Artist is Colette Schlamp

We are pleased to welcome back Colette Schlamp and her beautiful stainless steel jewellery.

I started making jewellery about 8-9 years ago, after taking a beading class here in Regina. After working with beads and other materials, I started to incorporate stainless steel and chain into my designs and largely use these materials to this day. I like to describe my jewellery as simple and modern. I like to use geometric shapes but will also add other elements if inspired to do so. I enjoy playing around with different shapes until I find a design that I like.

The Buds of May - Third Artist is Teresa Moxley

We are pleased to have Teresa Moxley join us again and with her whimsical Precious Metal Clay jewellery.

I am a retired teacher who was first introduced to silver clay at a teachers’ convention. I fell in love with the medium instantly. In 2009, I took a 3-day course and I am now a certified level one instructor although I have yet to pursue that opportunity.

My main focus has been creating pendants and earrings. I would like to venture into rings in the future. Several people have referred to my jewellery as being “organic”. Because each item is formed from clay, the lines tend to be quite soft and flowing.

I enjoy using my imagination to create unusual, one of a kind, pieces so my customers know they have a truly unique piece of jewellery.

The Buds of May - Second Artist is D.P. Creations Jewellery and Design

We are pleased to have David Peters of D.P. Creations join us again with his jewellery designs.

After receiving my Certificate from Ashworth, I start creating unique pieces of jewellery for family, friends, and vending at the local Arts and Crafts shows. That was almost three years ago this April and I have been learning, growing and evolving my own unique style of Jewellery ever since.

I would say I make a mixed variety of jewellery kinds and styles. I endeavor to be unique and artistic, but my years in the industry are echoed in my more production-oriented pieces. I work mostly in Sterling Silver, but am not opposed to working in Gold! I also work with Copper and a bit of brass. I love to use gemstones and always try to stay true to the quality of true natural gemstones, yet I do use Lab created (grown crystals) in order to provide my customers with a wide variety of colours and more unique types of stones while still keeping within a reasonable cost.

The Buds of May - First Aritst is K & B Jewelry

We are very pleased to introduce a couple of new artists to our show, Kelly Welder and Brenda Crawford. Together they create the beautiful pieces of K & B Jewelry.

We are Kelly Welder and Brenda Crawford, a Mother-Daughter duo. We both have a love for jewelry so we started K & B Jewelry which is located in Regina. We love to sit down and see what new pieces we can design. We use the finest quality materials to create our pieces.
