My family has a picture of me at age four having a rock sale displaying my shiny stone finds.  I have been fascinated with jewellery since I was a child.

I am particularly attracted to nature’s semi-precious stones, crystals, metals and woods.  Combining interest in fashion and coordination, I am inspired to create unique jewellery by appreciating its materials. 

My idea of a holiday is scouting out jewellery and supplies wherever I travel.  I describe myself as a kid in a candy store finding that perfect piece.

My name is Caroline Betker.  I come from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where I make my glass beads in my husband's shop.  My husband had started glass blowing not too long before I discovered a book on lampworking. 

I gave it a try and was hooked. 

Now I incorporate my glass beads into all of my jewellery products.

I am inspired by everything around me- sights, smells, feelings...nature, people objects - inspiration is everywhere.

I have been creating things since I was a teenager when I knit my first sweater. I have done macramé (that’s dating me), pottery, painting in oils, acrylics and water colour, sewing and making teddy bears from old fur coats. I was introduced to silver clay 3 years ago and fell in love with the possibilities this venue has to offer. I took a 3-day workshop and began creating my own jewellery. My main focus has been on pendants and earrings, although I have made rings and bracelets. In the near future I would like to get busy with ring making once again.

I began making jewellery about 6 or 7 years ago. My jewellery consists of simple yet modern designs with geometric shapes and sometimes features other elements that I find interesting. I have sold my jewellery for the past 3 years at Bazaart and a few other craft sales. It gives me a creative outlet to pursue in my spare time.

I love colours and rocks and things that are different! I try to create pieces that bring out the best of the materials I use. I find the prairie sky so inspiring because it can be so colourful and HUGE.

I am an artist who currently specializes handmade jewelry, silverwork, lampwork beads, and other accessories. The materials I use are Sterling silver, copper, my own lampwork glass beads, semi-precious stones, crystals and other metals. I am also a member of JewelleryWon.

I have been involved in arts and crafts of all sorts for most of my life.  I love working with my hands and have done cross stitch, Hardanger embroidery, crochet, Origami, designed and made teddy bears, painting, and other things too.

Years ago, my step-father took a jewellery class and I was impressed by the things he made.  I wanted to take the class too but put it off for a long long time.  When I finally took the class I was instantly hooked!  I am continually fascinated by the way a piece of metal can be transformed through many different techniques into something beautiful and wearable.  I have spent the last three years setting up my own studio and taking classes.  I work primarily with Sterling silver but will sometimes use copper and semi-precious stones and beads. I was born and raised in Regina where I will continue to take classes and work on designing and creating new and unique pieces of jewellery.

Roxanne Brown was born and raised in Regina growing up in a family of creative people. Roxanne has been an accomplished seamstress for her adult life with an eye, and enthusiasm for tasteful embellishment and accessories. Over the past 7 years Roxanne has also applied her accumulated skill and artistry to creating jewellery. Through artistically combining handcrafted Lampwork beads of other independent artists from around the world, semi-precious stones, Swarovski Crystals and other high quality components Roxanne creates original pieces that surprise and inspire! Roxanne also applies her skills to creating one-of-a-kind accent purses and scarves. Roxanne’s creations come together under the label of  The Finishing Touch. Over the past 6 years she has worked as lead seamstress with Dean Renwick Design Studio. Roxanne will continue to refine her skills and look for new directions to express her imagination.

I’ve always loved stones and used to collect them as a child.  I started designing jewellery as a therapy about five years ago after my parents had passed away.  Through self-teaching and help from friends I learned more about semi-precious stones and sterling silver.  After I lost my job, I started spending more time on my jewellery, attending Bead Shows for wholesalers in Tucson, Arizona, and looking for opportunities to sell-- beyond my network of friends and relatives! 

I’m always looking for unique stones, different colors and shapes. I also look for other metals as an alternative to sterling silver.  My goal is to make each jewellery piece unique … no two the same.  I may use similar stones but the designs are all different. I look for stones that are not common to Saskatchewan.  Although I use semi-precious stones, I strive to keep my costs down and my prices reasonable so that they are affordable for everyone.

Summer Hartzfeld has been blind since infancy but that hasn't stopped her from crafting beautiful pieces of jewellery. She lives with her guide-dog, Lake, who helps her get around the city. She joined the Regina Farmer's Market in 1997. Lake and Summer make their way to the market by bus, with Summer carrying all her cases in a back pack. She designed her cases herself and had them made by a local craftsperson.

Summer chooses her pieces by shape and texture, rather than by colour. She prefers to work with natural material such as semi-precious stones, sterling silver, and shells. Summer crafts all her own wire components from sterling silver wire. By touch she is able to make perfect loops and swirls. She can feel the smallest inclusion in a stone and can frequently tell the type of stone by its feel.

“I start playing with the beads, feeling each one, and figuring what shapes it will go with. I choose my stones carefully. My hands are my eyes. For colour I have to rely on the description by my sighted friends. Majority rules when it comes to colour, as everyone seems to have their own way of describing it. I think the stones show how amazing God's Creation is.”

Shauna Mitru is a self taught flamework artist that creates each piece of jewellery by hand herself, from the beads to the silver work. Her work is playful and reflects the joy she feels in plying her trade. She teaches bead making classes and is the open studio instructor at the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre in Regina.

I’ve always enjoyed making things.  I used to sew all of my clothes - often to go with favourite pieces of jewellery.  Now I choose my clothes as a backdrop for the jewellery I make.

I started making necklaces 5 years ago after winning beads and leather at a fundraising event.   Since then, I have taken numerous classes at the Neil Balkwill Arts Centre.  I work mostly in sterling silver and copper and I love working with rocks.  Semi-precious stones inspire me - I love the colours, the patterns and the weight of stone. 

I have always enjoyed wearing unique jewellery items and I’m delighted to be able to provide one of a kind pieces for my customers.

I have been creating jewellery for about 8 years mostly for family, friends and weddings.  I started with assembled pieces and working with some glass, but reached a point where I needed guidance from experienced jewellers. I started taking classes at The Neil Balkwill Community Centre working with and creating silver designs.  The guidance I received from other jewellers was wonderful.  Making jewellery is a hobby that I enjoy and will continue to do so for many years.

Buds of May - Eighth Artist is D. P. Creations

My name is David Peters and I am the artist behind D.P. Creations Jewellery and Design. I was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan but now live in Grand Coulee just 8 minutes outside of Regina.

As I grew up my mom was a great inspiration to my affinity for jewellery because, as I always say, "her hands made Liberace's look bare".
My love of jewellery led me to work in retail jewellery stores such as Birks, Paris Jewellers, and Ben Moss. Over these years I began to explore silver smithing and produced simple pieces for family and friends. After being in the retail industry I longed for more unique jewellery, rather than just cookie cutter designs, so I decided to explore my own designs believing that other people might feel the same.

I do find that my jewellery designs still have a classic style, mimicking the type of pieces I knew from the retail industry, but I am more readily exploring my artistic side as my confidence and knowledge of working with jewellery grows. My favourite type of jewellery I create is "Melts" - molten metals flowed of sterling or gold which create one-off designs and patterns. My favourite melt to date, I have dubbed "Ode to the Grinch" due to the old man's face I see in the sterling. I accented the "Grinch" with 14K yellow gold bezels and almandine garnets to create a lovely pendant. I love big heavy pieces but as of late, I find myself experimenting more with finer pieces such as filigree designs and forever my daunting nemesis - earrings!

I have always believed that education is fundamental to any endeavor, so I started with a few courses at the Neil Balkwill Centre. I went on to complete a certificate of Jewellery Design and Repair from Ashworth College (with Honours). Now I am happily venturing out into the Art Festival scene as D.P. Creations to explore and share my love of jewellery with others.

I find inspiration for my jewellery designs both in the past and modern trends. I try to weave the old and new together to create pieces that hold a classic edge yet be fashionable enough for today's consumer.

I started designing jewelry last summer and absolutely fell in love with it. I have my two Miniature Schnauzers to thank for this, as I was walking them they took me down a gopher hole. I injured my knee and could not do a lot, so I purchased a book and some supplies and started and fell in love with it.

It quickly took off and I was asked to provide Jewelry for a Grad Fashion show and then to have my jewelry available for purchase in the store that sponsorred Fashion Show.

I have taken classes from Debb Parent at Bead Plus and she has been so helpful and supportive and given me such great guidence. If it were not for her, I probably would not have continued!

I love every aspect of jewelery making from working with Crystals, semi precious stones, pmc silver, Chainmaille.

My favourite materials are working with Swarvoski Crystals and different Chainmaiile weaves. I love to figure out the new weaves and add the Beautiful Swarvoski Crystals to them to add the elegance and bling that only Swarovski has, and then adjusting the weave so make matching earrings, necklaces etc.

What I enjoy most about making jewelry is cusom designing an item that has meaning to someone and making beautiful and elegant jewelry that will make someone feel good when wearing it whether you are wearing it for an every day purpose or a special occassion. I do design my jewelry so that it can be worn for both every day and special occassion, so you can get a lot of wear out of it. I will meet with Brides and Grads to design something for their special day, with their input, so it is unique.

Throughout my years of living in Regina, I’ve been a regular attending all the various nearby craft shows and purchasing unique gifts for family and friends. I never thought I would eventually be someone that would have a table and sell my own wares.

I’ve always enjoyed creating different things with my hands, however, that was put on hold when I was deeply entrenched in work life. When I retired from the provincial government, I knew that I wanted to do something creative once again.

In 2007 I registered for my first Jewellery class at Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre. I’ve taken numerous classes and learned many different techniques. Today I continue to take classes to improve my skills and incorporate many of the learned techniques into my Jewellery.

I really enjoy working with the various metals (silver, copper, titanium, and niobium) to make and design my jewellery. Currently I’m enjoying the wonderful colours I get when anodizing titanium or niobium. The brilliant blues and purples are my particular favourites.

Throughout the time at the studio I have met many wonderful people. It’s been a great way to be creative and socialize at the same time. The social aspect of meeting others that are also creating is just what I wanted to fulfill my retirement.

In the past whenever I needed a pick me up or just wanted to treat myself I’d buy a new pair of earrings. Consequently, I enjoy making mostly earrings but I do make pendants and some bangles/bracelets.

Most of my jewellery is fairly petite and delicate, with simple lines. I believe my pieces are unique to themselves and no two are exactly the same, something is always a wee bit different.

I hope you will enjoy wearing my jewellery as much as I enjoy making and designing the one of a kind pieces.

It is not my intention to make a living by selling my jewellery but to enjoy creating and cover my material costs. I try to keep the prices down so that everyone can enjoy a new piece just like I have done over the past number of years. Everyone needs to treat themselves! Enjoy!
